What to Do When You Don’t Feel Like Writing

The best thing to do when you don’t feel like writing is to—write anyway. I know; it’s hard. It takes focus and quiet. It takes ideas. But honestly, if you’re going to call yourself a writer, you have to write. That’s what writers do.

But for fun, what can you do when you’re not in the mood to write? Here are some suggestions that are writing related.

  1. Interview one of your characters
  2. Read writing magazines or a new writing book
  3. Organize your writing space or laptop bag
  4. Read through articles you’ve saved
  5. Start an idea file
  6. File all the loose papers laying around on your desk
  7. Research a setting for a work in progress
  8. Look for writing blogs to follow or comment on
  9. Read a book for fun
  10. Plot out a new story or article
  11. Look through baby books for character names
  12. Go to the library and check out books similar to what you write
  13. Search for agents or publishers

If you don’t feel like doing anything writing related, here are some other suggestions:

  1. Take a nap
  2. Eat chocolate
  3. Go for a walk or swim
  4. Play Monopoly Deal with your writing group (we particularly like this one J)
  5. Go shopping
  6. Bake
  7. Read a novel
  8. Clean your home
  9. Daydream
  10. Rake, shovel, or hoe, depending on the season
  11. Wash the car
  12. Send a card to a friend or relative who would love to hear from you
  13. Go to the zoo or a museum
  14. Organize kitchen cupboards or the garage
  15. Take a trip
  16. Go to a movie or play
  17. Play scrabble or solitaire on the computer
  18. Paint or draw a scene from a favorite book
  19. Mop and sweep the floors
  20. Fold the laundry and iron

Honestly, I could come up with a hundred things to do other than writing, because I find myself occasionally doing these things when I should be writing. Sometimes though, I have to do some of these things otherwise I can’t concentrate on my writing. But if you’re finding yourself constantly not getting any writing done, consider whether you’re procrastinating and do your writing first.

What kinds of things do you do when you should be writing? Offer your answers in the comments. We can all commiserate together:)
